Take a hypothetical coating that lasts longer in a controlled wear test. The result begins as a measurement. Moving it through an industrial organization changes the question several times.
- Engineering
- Which load, temperature, material, and failure mode were tested?
- Operations
- Can the process reproduce the result at the required throughput and yield?
- Purchasing
- Can the route, supplier, and material be qualified?
- Business leadership
- Does the expected improvement justify the cost, disruption, and exposure?
These roles are evaluating one proposal through different responsibilities. Research on organizational buying distinguishes users, influencers, buyers, deciders, and gatekeepers for the same reason. Agreement on the science does not automatically produce authority to proceed.
Keep one chain intact
A translation record should connect the observed result, the conditions under which it holds, the operating consequence, the role that can authorize the next commitment, and the threshold that could still stop it.
The route also runs from the organization back to the laboratory. A request for “higher reliability” is too broad to guide development. Engineering needs the relevant failure, operating conditions, detection method, and acceptance criterion.
Two failure modes are common. Simplification can remove a boundary condition or promote an estimate to a fact. Technical detail can bury the action until nobody can say which choice it informs. Good translation leaves both the claim and the responsibility legible.
